Arabat Fortress

Arabat fortress on the Arabat Spit

It is not known exactly when the Arabat fortress appeared. At the end of the fifteenth century, the Turks captured the Crimea, and at all strategic points of the peninsula they began to strengthen the old and build new fortresses. The Arabat fortress itself first appeared on maps in the middle of the seventeenth century, but it became widely known only during the six-year Russian-Turkish war. The capture of the Arabat fortress in 1771 by Russian troops was such a significant event that Catherine II was personally informed about it.

The design of the Arabat fortress deserves special mention. As it should be according to the principles of construction of fortifications in the Middle Ages, there was a moat in front of the walls of the fortress, behind it - an earthen rampart, which, by the way, has survived to this day. The fortress ditch was filled with water from the Azov Sea and Sivash with the help of special channels. The strategically advantageous position of the Arabat fortress was due to the fact that at the place of its construction Arabat arrow was a narrow strip between Sivash and Azov Sea. Powerful gates blocked the entrance to the Arabat fortress, which was located on the side of the Kerch Peninsula of Crimea. All other directions were protected by fortress walls with several rows of loopholes, in which guns of various capacities were installed, which made it possible to keep the all-round defense for a long time.

After the Crimea was annexed to Russia at the end of the eighteenth century, Arabat fortress retained its strategic importance for a long time - it was used during the Crimean campaign, when it was attacked by an Anglo-French expeditionary force with Turkish troops and soldiers of the Sardinian kingdom, so that the fortress, once built by the Turks, successfully resisted the British, the French, and their builders - the Turks.

The Arabat fortress is one of the most mysterious fortresses, there is practically no documentary information about it, serious scientific research of the fortress was also not carried out, so the Arabat fortress still keeps its secrets.
